The Gravy Front

We had Turkey, Potatoes, Salade, Vegies, Wine and Desserts all ready for curtain time on the 25th but something was missing... The Gravy !!! OMG No gravy on the potatoes nor Turkey. I had not signed on for such a travesty of a holiday meal. Hence for the first time ever I tried making gravy with what was on hand. There was no scraps left from the cooking of the meal, no vegies nor juices from their cooking either. With but 10 min to go til show time things where beguining to look desperate on the "gravy front"... It was then, when we had all but given up hope that a small jar of turkey broth earlier hidden in the depths of the fridge by the cook ressurfaced as if on cue. This is what I improvised on the spot and I must say as a first time comer to the front with no experience nor references on the said matter.. That was one delicious Gravy !!

Ingredients:

Butterball Turkey Broth
3 tablespoons of Flour
A very generous tablespoon of Butter
A little Garlic from what I could only defined as pre chewed garlic in a jar ...('bout half a big clove)
Peper
A pinch of salt (yaaa cause there was t enough salt in there already... hehehe)
And a sercret ingredient that I will take to my grave. It rimes with "Shut Up Meg" and people go nuts for it when cooking for the holidays... lol

Twas the morning after

Twas the morning after christmas and in the country house nothing could be heard.

Nothing but the soft and distant heating fan which did not quite make it to my bedroom...

Downstairs the christmas tree was naked from the roots up to the bottom branches.

Piles of opened gifts had taken over the living room.

Cookies, "milk" where nearly all gone, "hic" ... "HIC"

But enought of this bizard soft spoken suburban half concocted tale ! To the matter at hand ! As I have been behind in pretty much everything this year, I am pleased to bring back what I hope will soon become a holiday classic. Better late than ever, LOL. So from now 'til the 31 enjoy theise spacemast classics. Typical holiday scenes from a typical extended familly from a long, long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

P.S. Twas a good haul this year. That fat man managed to squizz down the chimney with worth while presents for all concerned. Received some cool outdoors gear and one modern worktable from Ikea.... FITS !

Almost Christmas

It s beguining to look alot like christmas ... Well kinda. A little bit of snow here... a little bit of ice there and lights burning bright across town well into the fresky nights. Though I have to admit so far we have been blessed with amazing weather. No -20 s so far... knock on wood. Nor catastrophic flood and record snow falls grounding airplaines and stranding passagers in stranger lands. Some might say it s a triffle borring around here, well at least we are still in one piece !! Something I am very gratfull for considering the news for theise last few weeks. I can but hope it will finally calm down in time for the week-end. Especially in the Maritimes and Gaspesie.

Le grand stratagème Stewart Griffin a répété a mainte reprise les mots suivants; "Victory Will Be Mine !"

Also, starting tomorow morning after 2 months research is my new job in the Est End of Town. Should prove quite interesting. Well let you know how it turns out !

First 2010 Thanksgiving & Les Loups in the Gatineau Park.

Wow ! My first 2010 Thanksgiving supper was realllly good. Sweet potatoes as far the eye can see, big bird, salad, squash, filling, cranberries sauce.... Oh and of course I took lead for dessert with my home made kick ass apple pie ! Picked the apples myself a couple of weeks back and followed the secret award winning recipe to the T. Thank you very much Rebecca & Roommates aka our hostess for the night for a delicious meal and Marie for inviting me :) Looking forward to Thanksgiving numero dos at my house this upcoming week-end !

Last friday went hiking with a new acquaintance in the Gatineau Park for a few hours. Hee... it's big ! Did the wolves loop early afternoon; munched on one of the lookout points overlooking the Outaouais River and took a couple of nice pictures including one Tai-chi Emilie ... ;P Clever lass inviting me to hike a trail which incidentally shares the same name as the one I have neglected this year back in the Jacques Cartier Park ! Weather was fair despite the sometime menacing clouds and though the trails was a little "moist" here and there on the way up it was quite enjoyable. Twas good to get my toes dirty so to speak and I'm really looking forward to exploring more of this park which as it turns out is pretty close to my current abode across from the said river.

Usual bitching and follow up...

Helloo People, so the interviews are proceeding smoothly around here. Actually getting call backs and interviews from the various placement agencies and buisness I have applied for. Big difference from the Montreal job search scene, at least as far as I am concerned. Nothing so far but believe you me I am working on it ! Have't explored Ottawa so much as I am in survival/job search mode but did manage to locate a few points of interest. The buses around here are simply amazing time wise ! Course @%#$%#$% expensive and only sold in packs of 6 .. So here is how it works, you need two tickects a pop for adults for a one way trip. With 6 tickets that means you get a round trip and just enought left overs to go somewhere else with not enought to come back. I wonder's who's brilliant idea that was. Etk. Oh crossed the border back into la belle province pour un ptit café en bonne compagnie en fin de semaine. Maudis chemins tout croche @#%#$%$?$?& !! LOL

Apple Pickin' 2010

Apple Pickin' today !!This year I broke with tradition and tried a new Orchard near Ottawa. A little 20 acres called Mountain Orchard in you guessed it the town of Mountain about 45 min out. No mountains to speak of and the service is... well very young and bloody slow %$?$#%?#$%?# But the apple trees where so low you barelly needed to raise your hand to fill you bag with deliciousness. Big juicy apples ripe for the picking and what is this ?! Donuts and fresh cider on the way out ! Oh and the donuts ? Made fresh in front of you and served steaming hot from their oil bath with a dash of cinamon. Mium mium ! 20 pounds for me, 20 pounds for Christie and a couple of well taken photos from Ian. A productive excursion and soooo many yummy pies to come :)

Yup, this will do nicely ... : D

It was nearly a week ago that I moved up yet another river to our nations' capital. The moved went pretty smooth as far as I am concern. Dad had a flat on the trailer on the way to the city before picking me up and I got a tree branch fall square on my head while he was pocking at the car trailer hitch for the bicycle rack. It went as follow:

Tap tap tap with the hammer and screw driver
I joined him on the street
Tap tap tap he went and I eagerly watched
Tap tap toc it went
Down came the tree branch on my head
Out came the metal cover from the car trailer hitch
Out laughing in the street went the rest of our merry moving crew.

Had lunch and about an hour or so later left the city packed up to our hears in both vehicles + one low ridding trailer. Had supper on the local burger joint and after a good brunch Sunday morning my helpers headed back home and I was left to unpack my crap with the occasional break to snoop around the neighborhood. I gotta say I think I like it here ! I counted 4 outdoors, kayak & Canoe shops within 5 min walking distance from my new abode and another 2 min to the nearest dedicated bus line not to mention a very short car ride to the bridge connecting this side of the country with la Belle Province. Took me 10 min yesterday to get downtown via the dedicated bus line for an interview thought I'll admit the usage of two bus tickets for a one way pass in order to differentiate kids from adults is a little weird... Just print different colors people. Oh and I get the feeling I'm going to miss the magnetic / rechargeable bus card. Already yesterday I was searching franticly through my pockets for the ever-elusive paper ticket, lol. Got a burger and breakfast joints right around the corner and I was informed via a tasting sample (salami on cream cheese on fresh bagel) from my roommate that the cousin or uncle to the owner of St Viateur bagels has a shop nearby also. Same recipe just a little less time dedicated to the rising of the doe =denser bagels. Yaaaaaa I think I might still have gobble those up with cream cheese. Just to be fair to the St Viateur family you know... Can't show any favoritism now can I ? ;P All in all this place is turning out to be pretty sweet.

Oh and we go a very sociable & mellow rabbit walking the grounds around the house.

P.S. Dad had another flat tire about one hour out of the capital while heading back home… Driving back this weekend to get it fixed… AGAIN ! Lol , naahhh not funny though....

Gas in the city & the Ungreatfull Troll

FWI yestrday the Gas was at 99.9 off the 40 heading North and only 5 minutes later off Decary it was at 108.... Just saying' Oh and yes I did fill up at 99.9 on this occasion !

Next on the agenda is the ever growing listing of pet peeves.

Number 34 : If you can't do your work without bitching and putting the fault on others who are helping you by the way. Don't go around all hight and mythy when they try to share an olive branche. That little troll came in at 3 pm (I at 12) at work and had the nerve to tell me he did't mind doing over time and I quote cry over it. I just did half of your work at the expence of half of mine with one hour of overtime and this is the thanks I get !!! His work had priority, obviously. Hence I obliged but my shift was over an hour ago so really the only thing keeping me there: doing HIS work since he did't have time and to try and keep the system from crashing and him out of trouble. So why is it that I' ll be in trouble come monday and that little pinheaded dwarf of a troll will most likelly be walking on sunshine !?! And another thing, next time I try and do someone of the kind a favour, shoot me !

Update

Indeed it is begining to be quite nice out there, birds chipping away, purse dogs yapping and shall I risk saying "growling" in a smurftanoying way ? lol The area around my appartment has been buzzing with life theise past few days.

So it has been a while since last I posted. Truth be told, everytime I sat down for an entry I felt like I was leaving stuff behind and so never completed/posted a number of entries now collecting dust in a dark and dusty server room. What is going on theise days ? Well finally working for one thing and am activelly fishing for a new appartment and co. as my cordon bleu chef will be moving out soon. The Patio has yet to be broken in hamac wise but I do believe later this week "peeping tommettes" might be in for a real treat as my toes will be sticking out from the hamac weather permitting.

How is it going ?

.
Really not so good. Feelin stressed out, both in body and mind. Ooooh how I despise this job search waiting game. Those endless sleepless days waiting and leaving messages. Sending CV's out like a quantragilion other morons. Locking the door, a deaf ear to expences and dues. A high price for this ongoing avoidance !

When sleep not longer cuts it ... Anyone knows where I might get some of those "magic mushrooms" Spike injested ? Been a while since I took a descent walk.

Good measure revemping adventures with a side order rant !

.
.
So last week in honours of the living room revemping Ikea as well as Canadian tire were visited on numerous occasions. First came book shelves, which was immediatly followed by a return trip to the store in order to get the needed screws I imagined I already had. Course one can hardly go to Ikea and leave with only a pack of screws. Enters the new kitchen island module / cutting board / Artisant Kitchaid mixing bowl table / addition. Added a few jars for the kitchen to round things up.

A few days later as I was seeking a crumy new cordless phone rumours came to my ear about a certain television stand set on special at Canadian tire. 18.99 for a low rise corner T.V stand with underneath shelf built in the structure. Did I mention it was down from 69.99 ?! So after some convincing from a roommate of mine we finally pick it up in the cart with a crappy new cordless phone. Local clerk did not have the keys for the phone behind the "not so much bullet proof glass doors" so she called in reinforcements. An old geezer shows up. He can't open the slide doors due to the sheer amount of phone boxes pressing again the glass. After a few curses and what could only be described as he forcefully trying to force open the damm thing he shifts his attention to remove the blocking boxes out of the way. How did he managed this feat ? I'm glad you asked, he began pulling the variously priced phones boxes and throwing them in the alley like trash in that big shady trash container behind your appartment building. Finally I get my phone but then I still wanted to shop around a little. So the original clerk takes my phone away from me and indicates it will be waiting for me at customer service... Heeee so I take it you people are afraid I will steal this 22$ phone by hiding it under my coat or something ? Cause that table in my basket is too large to hide so obvisouly I will seek reparation by stealing a crappy 22$ phone !! WTF !! Later I get to the customer service area which is now conveniatly located behind the cash. So again I need to ask permission from the sole employee maning this station.

"excuse me, can I have my phone now ?"
She gives me this look while pondering the meaning of my request
In the meantime I add to my plea and original request;"cause I would like to pay for it"
She then yells to someone else out of sight in the store ; " Can I give this man this phone ?"
Note that at this point I actually crossed over the customer service counter and I already have the box in my hand.
She then turns around and seeing I already took what she was entrusted to keep for me in the first place (just in case I wanted to steal it you know) and waves I can now take it.

The Canadian Tire on St Jacque it would seem no longer believes in cashiers during what they consider off hours and so I had to use the "automated self serve cash station". Course when one get into the designated cash station one has to scan his item. Great, now how I'm I suppose to scan a metre across box containing a thick wooden table on that cute little scanner 5 cm off the overlapping control pannel !?! At this point I requested assistance from again the lone and singe employee responsible for the four automated stations. After a minute or so of glaring into empty space she comes to and ultimatly entered the barcode manually.

As I was leading the basket away, the employee came up to me and politelly asked;

"you know this table is white right ?"

"Can't say I did as I was looking for the colour displayed in the atrium to this store. Do you have that colour in stock ? "

"No, no we don't. Only in white."

"Might others stores have that colour ?"

"No, no we are most likelly the only one with this promotion..."

"@%#%@%#%#$% " I returned to the automated station and had the purchase reversed.

Then my roomate had this stroke of genius and it went as follow ;

"Did't they have a bunch of those tables in the atrium when we came in ? "

Yes !! So walk back into the store and start sifting through the NUMEROUS boxes and to my surprise they did not only have white but also the desired darker wood tone as well as a lighter version matching exacly the appartment current furnitures... Picked that little one up, walked back into the store, back to the automated check out station and gave that employee a big; "look at what you have for sale after all wave" LOL

A couple of days later, this past friday it was decided the living room still needed improvment. So back to Ikea this time for cushions covers, mineral oil for the kitchen island & possibly picture frames. Turns out the innitial measurments were off and so left with CD / DVD wall shelves and a few more kitchen jars, again for good measure : )

On the drive back, gas is at 98.8 Youpi ! La bête was thirsty hence perfect timming. At this point I want to bring your attention to the time 7 pm isshhh. I park, make my selection and ... nothing. A crackling voice indicates I have to go in. Okay, expected as much, security reasons, it's all good. I walk into the service station and ask for a fill up... clerk asks me how much I want. I'm like I don't know I just want to fill my car. Clerk again zones out for a few seconds looking outside her window (what are theise people on for crying out load !! #$%$%?) then return her attention to the busness at hand. At this point I'm like screw this, just give me 35 worth and let me be. Pretty sure she was only seconds away from calling in her manager to ask for advice. Course I later learned I coud of paid for more and then have them re-embourse me but considering the sharp and witty clerk I was facing...

Have a great week all !

Birthday Ribs for the Road

.
So ! Been home for almost a week now. I managed to squizz in a few very very delicious ribs from Baton rouge last monday night just before catching the bus... barely. No dog sled for me after all though there was collaboration from various parties to get me where I needed to go. Friends, Restorant (6:30 to 9:50), Friends, Bus (10:00), Metro (12:50), Shoes aaaannnnd presto at home only a little past one am.

A number of friends gathered at the celebrated restaurant for a combined birthday meal. As in two friends were lured to the city under false pretences... héhéhéhé. Course, could of been a little more subtle had we not parked the car so bloody near the main entrance... Hell Jess, one of "to be surprised" even managed to deduced the approximate number of car occupant & nature as she was walking in via the # of folded seats and purchase bags left behind !!! LOL Talk about inquisitive !

Happy Birthday Jess !

Happy Birthday Nicolas !

Marooned in a winter wonderland postcard

.
So it would seem that my car now suffers from two leaking motor gaskets. Something about preston ozzy dangerously close to vital components that are not preston proof... Hence for the next few days and until I can get this fixed, I'm officially marooned at my folks place. I do apoligise to my friends I was suppose to give a ride to and to another I had made plans with earlier today. I did not expect my schedueled 30 min oil change to mount into a 6 hours labour job plus replacement parts to be determined a later date... On the plus side & while I wait, I do believe the local coffee place is only 25 min away by foot in summer. Since I don't have a car and there is no such thing as public transport around here I'm considering using the dog sled in order to cut down on the transit time. I ll let you know how it turns out...

assimilated & doing good

.
So it turns out that the city actually might just have some hold on me. Who would of thought ! Been working out of a small town for nearly two weeks now and I have to admit, I miss the lights and corner cafes and bakeries. Not to mention mini markets with a custom brand of products and ingredients. No no I ain't no cook (yet) but more and more I noticed an inclination for good food. Might have something to do with being spoiled in that area...

For instance, last Sunday night supper before heading back down (oh and the reason I reached my hometown at 10:45 pm instead of 5 , 6 pm... )

You can find most ingredients around here with some research but somehow it aint' the same. So many "custom brands" so little diversity I have taken for granted it would seem.

Hummm... ciudad assimilation you say ? yup !

Here the job is going well, as in I'm doing good. Got great contacts on both side of the market (transporters and loogers) and they have proven themselves to be good compagny in my dayly tasks as I seek to import wood to quench the local and might I add very hungry mill. Had a few setbacks due to the cold and breaking down machinery (yards cranes & Trucks). Oh and a moose also decided to drop by and crash into one of my dispatched trucks earlier this week !! But overall things are proceeding smoothly for me. Should be back home under the bright lights sometime sunday evening just in time for the Fox sunday night cartons, héhéhéhé. Timming timming !

New Year Update & Mckay & Trains

.
Bonne Année groupe !

Happy New Year ye people !

Been a while since I posted, what with the holidays and all. 45 min drive in, 45 min drive out ... Thanks god I got my trusty IPod at my side in the car cause morning radio in theise parts is murder. Then again, the gas priced just jumped from 99.3 on wed to 107 on thursday so realllllllly in how much of a hurry can one be with those prices !!??

Dla bonne bouff maison, aawwwww soo good ! le pick up chez post canada de ma Nikon (simply an awsome little point and shoot cam) et un ptit brunch demain matin.

Oh and in the honor of the dawning year, of my travelling around, the endless debates yet to come :P and also because you are all as big fans of Doctor Rodney McKay as I am. Here is his take on a life & death dilema.
